Fermanagh Schools Ju Jitsu ProgrammeAn
important aspect of any activity is the
provision of a comfortable and safe environment
for children. Since the late 1980's and early
1990's WJJF Ireland has run a very successful
Schools Programme in different areas
throughout Northern Ireland. This was introduced
to the Fermanagh area in 2004 by Sensei Lyle
Gawley. Their are several schools taking
part in the programme. The classes are held as
after school activities.
Jones Memorial Primary School - Monday
Holy Trinity Primary School - Tuesday
Enniskillen Model Primary School- Wednesday
Holy Trinity Primary School - Thursday
The response from students, teachers,
headmasters and parents has shown that the
Fermanagh Schools Ju Jitsu Programme has an
extremely positive effect on children by
encouraging them to be active, by training their
brain as well as their bodies, by setting
realistic goals for them to achieve and by
giving them an opportunity for fun.
The Fermanagh Schools Ju Jitsu Programme is
run by Sensei Lyle Gawley 4th Dan. Sensei Gawley is a
full time professional coach and is also in
charge of Lisnaskea and Omagh Ju Jitsu Clubs.
GCSE PE Ju Jitsu module
In September 2006 a new Ju Jitsu module
started which everyone in
Northern Ireland who is studying towards their
GCSE in PE can take. This is an exciting
opportunity for students to try an activity
which they normally wouldn't get a chance to do.
It also gives existing Ju Jitsu students the
chance to bring something they are passionate
about directly into their school life. Any
schools or students who are interested in
finding out more about this new module please
contact us.
Schools Courses
An extension of the Fermanagh Schools
Programme is
Self Defence
for sixth form students in secondary schools and
in particular ladies self defence in girls
secondary schools e.g. Enniskillen Collegiate
Grammar School has run courses each year since
2004 for their sixth form students.
As well as self defence courses for older
students, many primary and secondary schools
have chosen to offer 6 - 10 week courses in Ju
Jitsu/self defence as an alternative activity
during P.E. classes. These classes are available
to all students regardless of age, gender,
ability etc. What many teachers find is that the
students usually get to try things like
football, rugby, basketball etc and never get
the chance to try something a bit different so
they always enjoy a Ju Jitsu course. Another
advantage is that the students who normally
aren't particularly good at the usual P.E.
activities love to take part as ability isn't an
issue due to everyone starting at the same
level. Some schools who have run this type of
course are:
St. Mary’s PS, Teemore St. Mary’s, Irvinestown
Erganagh PS, Castlederg Drumlegagh PS, Castlederg
Castlederg High School Killen PS
Erne School, Enniskillen Lisnaskea High School
Aghadrumsee PS, Rosslea
St. Mary's, Killesher
St. Mary's, Newtownbutler St. Ninnidh's, Derrylin
Bunscoil an Traonaigh, Lisnaskea St. Aiden's, Derrylin
St. Eugene's, Roslea Devenish College
Enniskillen Collegiate Grammar School Holy Trinity PS, Enniskillen
St. Mary's PS,

St. Martin's P.S., Garrison
(Please note that places for these courses
are limited as many schools ask for a course
year after year due to their popularity with the
pupils so booking a place for your school well
in advance is recommended)
